Message from the Department Chair
This is an exciting time for the Division of Computing Studies! We are moving forward rapidly on many fronts and I hope that reviewing several of these at this site will excite you as well.
Our undergraduate curriculum was revised extensively in 2006, and the graduate program is now being carefully reviewed. See the degree programs pages for more information about these developments.
In 2006 the ASU Polytechnic campus defined a "Polytechnic core" that provides a distinctive quality to all the programs offered here.
The ability to make effective, creative use of computing technology is fundamental to the success of that initiative – and indeed,
is essential to producing graduates who will be effective professionals. Our faculty are working collaboratively with faculty
in other disciplines to build bridges, and in the coming year you will see new courses and refinements of existing courses designed
to serve the entire campus.
After years of declining enrollment in computing programs nationwide (and we followed that trend here, too), last year our
enrollments began to show a modest increase, and the projected enrollment for this coming year appears to be dramatic – perhaps
as much as 25% growth. At the same time our admissions process for the graduate program is becoming more rigorous and we are
attracting excellent new students. We are enjoying the best of both worlds – growing in both quality and quantity.
Those who hire our graduates will be well served!
In 2008 we will move into brand new quarters that provide office space for our growing faculty, state-of-the-art server
and high performance computing space, five new instructional laboratories, and access to a number of new mediated classrooms.

I encourage you to contact me if you are a considering joining our program, an interested parent, or a company that would
like to work with our students

About the Division of Computing Studies
The Division of Computing Studies (DCST) is organized within the College of Technology and Innovation on ASU’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona. The Division offers professional bachelor's and master's degree programs in applied computer sciences concentrations.
The Division's mission is to provide students with a laboratory-rich learning environment that values creativity and paces the evolution of the computing industry. Faculty work closely with the computing and software industries to define and deliver curricula that focuses on the languages, methods and tools used today in the computing world.
Computing Studies graduates are prepared for careers in a number of industry areas including digital design applications, distributed Web-based systems, embedded systems and networks, and in application areas such as engineering, biology or business.
